Welcome to the Planning Newsletter; featuring a round-up of recently submitted, approved and refused planning applications. Our featured item is on listed buildings.
๐๏ธ Feature: Listed buildings
There are 196 listed buildings (or groups of buildings) and 16 scheduled monuments in Blaby District. Buildings of special architectural or historical interest can be given listed building status, a form of legal protection. This means that anyone wishing to demolish a listed building or alter or extend it in a way that would affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest, must apply for listed building consent.
This may also apply to separate structures within the grounds of a listed building such as walls, gates and railings. This legal protection makes carrying out such work without first obtaining listed building consent a criminal offence.
A scheduled monument is a nationally important archaeological site, which similarly requires scheduled monument consent in order to carry out work. An example is Kirby Muxloe Castle (pictured above), which is one of the earliest brick-built structures in the Midlands.
Historic England have published a Guide for Owners of Listed Buildings, containing information and advice for those who live in or care for listed buildings. To enquire about listed buildings you can visit our website below:
